Ode to Polaroid

For those of you who don’t know, The Impossible Project is out to save the Polaroid, and has already released a new silver shade film for SX-70 cameras (although sold out at the moment.) However, I was able to get my hands on the last 2 packs of the original Fade to Black film, which as the name implies, will turn completely black within 24 hours after taking the shot. The concept of creating art for the present brought me back to fine art school, when I was taught to not treasure the piece itself, but the process. There are however two ways of saving an image, and below are a few examples of both. The images on the left are scanned just minutes after taking the shots, notice how dark they already were, and the images on the right are peeled (the emulsion is peeled away from the transparency and dried, to stop the development process.)

Invitations

For those of you who don’t know, I’m getting married next year! And this is fabulous for many reasons, obviously! But it’s also been a great learning experience for me. I know a lot about weddings from the prospective of a photographer, however, I’m also realizing just how much my couples are planning outside of their details with me. And for my fellow OCD planners, I don’t know how you do it without a lot of help from planners, wedding blogs, and previously married friends. I’m fortunate to know the right places to look for advice, so I thought I would share our invitations.

I don’t recommend taking on a project like this for hundreds of guests. However, if you’re having a small, intimate wedding, I say think outside of the 2-D box, and create something really unique for your guests.

Taking a save the date idea from Martha Stewart, and working it into our invitation, really got me thinking sculpturally. I then found doll suitcases, map stickers from Paper Source, and pearl business cards, for the bulk of the written information.

Las Vegas

Last week I was in Vegas for a tradeshow (which also means, I will be releasing a new album in a few weeks!) And although I rarely shoot when I’m traveling, it seemed like a requirement to have my camera at a tradeshow that brings thousands of photographers. So in the hour I took a few breaths of fresh air, outside of the MGM, I wandered the strip, and admired the absurdity of this strange land called Las Vegas. (If you’ve ever been, you know you don’t actually have to leave your hotel for days, and days, and days. Heck, the airport is so close, your plane practically lands in the hotel lobby as it is.) And although I did a lot more staring than shooting, here a few things I found… lets just say, interesting.

Last Friday the photography worlds collided. Myself, and a friend/photographer extraordinaire, Channing, hopped on the commuter rail to meet up with Stacey, another rock star of the photo world, for some fun in the providence sun. And what do three photographers do on their day off together? Take pictures of course!

Recently however, I have been inspired by the work of illustrators, and more specifically, those who work in collage and line drawing. So I decided to push my images into another realm, using the tools I am familiar with. (As much as I love drawing, pencils have become a foreign object to me, in comparison to my camera.) So there you have it.

(Due to resizing for the web, some detail was lost, but that didn’t stop me from sharing.)

I don’t post much about myself on my blog, nor have I ever had photos of myself up, so this is my debut appearance. Two friends and fellow photographers (Rachel Hadiashar of mergeweddings.com and Kelly Lorenz of klimagery.com) were kind enough to photograph me recently. In October, Rachel took me out to Franklin Park, (which if you haven’t explored, I highly recommend.) And I brought a few cameras with me as well, including an old film camera I got from my grandpa, that he picked up in Germany, while in WWII. And in November, Kelly photographed Eric (my gentleman friend) and I, for the first time in over 6 years; it’s nice to have a few photos of us, without my arm in them! Thank you ladies! It was nice to be on the other side of the camera for a change.
